Saliva collected using the ORAcollect device demonstrated high specificity and negative predictive value for SARS-CoV-2 detection by RT-PCR, with some positive results suggesting an earlier detection window than nasopharyngeal swabs. Conversely, the evaluated rapid antigen tests showed unacceptably low sensitivity for screening purposes.

The study identified a mutation in the amelogenin gene from saliva samples collected using self-collection kits, which showed a statistically significant correlation with high caries experience in children. These results suggest that non-invasive genetic screening from saliva could facilitate early risk assessment for dental caries.
