Obtaining miRNA from Saliva-Comparison of Sampling and Purification Methods

Urbizu et al.

The finding, in our words

The study found that combining the Oragene saliva collector with the miRNeasy kit gave the most sensitive detection of seven saliva miRNAs, and that different collector-kit combinations can be selected to suit different study needs.

The study developed a curcumin-embedded paper sensor for bilirubin detection in saliva, coupled with an IoT-enabled hand-held reader. Clinical testing in 18 jaundiced infants demonstrated good correlation with reference methods for both salivary and blood bilirubin, indicating utility for decentralised neonatal jaundice monitoring.

A graphene lab-on-a-chip device achieved high accuracy and precision for multiplex renal biomarker testing in serum and saliva, with sensitivities ranging from 89.0 to 99.7 per cent. Untrained volunteers produced results comparable to trained chemists, suggesting the device is suitable for patient-centric at-home diagnostics and could improve access to chronic kidney disease monitoring.

The study found that the Oragene OG-600 receptacle provided the highest concentration of salivary DNA, including short fragments suitable for analysis, and successfully detected HPV DNA from patient saliva. This matters for decentralised sampling as it supports the use of a standardised, self-collection device for non-invasive cancer biomarker detection.

Electrochemical aptamer biosensors measured glucose and adenosine monophosphate in undiluted saliva with pico- to nanomolar sensitivity and remained reusable for up to seven days after storage. This noninvasive approach could support point-of-care diagnosis and at-home monitoring without the need for blood draws.

Point-of-care salivary osmolarity measurement correlated strongly with first-morning urine specific gravity in hypertensive older adults, and patients on diuretics showed significantly higher values indicating dehydration. This suggests saliva testing could serve as a rapid, noninvasive alternative for hydration screening in community-based, decentralised care.
