Comparison of Human Papillomavirus Genotype Detection in Paired Urine and Self-Collected Cervical Swabs: A Pilot Study

This pilot study of women with HPV-positive cervical swabs found urine samples detected high-risk HPV genotypes in 94% (16/17) of cases, achieving 98.8% diagnostic accuracy compared with self-collected cervical swabs. The strong agreement suggests urine testing could support decentralised cervical cancer screening, though larger studies are needed.

    Self-sampling for HPV genotyping: a study of vaginal and urine collection in Brazilian women with high-grade lesions

    A study of 100 Brazilian women with high-grade cervical lesions found excellent concordance for high-risk HPV detection between clinician-collected samples and patient-centric, self-collected vaginal or first-void urine samples. Self-sampling was preferred for comfort, though the study's single-centre setting may limit generalisability.

    Urinary detection of high-risk HPV DNA to enhance cervical cancer screening in developing countries

    The hrHPV ReadyMix qPCR Kit detected high-risk HPV DNA in self-collected urine with 80.9% sensitivity and 100% specificity when compared to cervical swabs. Urine testing identified a similar HPV prevalence (6.28%) to cervical swabs (6.62%), suggesting this non-invasive method could expand cervical cancer screening programmes in low-resource settings.

    Evaluating different samples & techniques for hr-HPV DNA genotyping to improve the efficiency of risk profiling for oral & cervical cancers in Sikkim, India

    Self-collected urine samples detected high-risk HPV DNA in 25.5 per cent of women and 8 per cent of men by qPCR, while oral gargle samples detected HPV in 7 per cent of women and 5 per cent of men. With good diagnostic accuracy against Pap smear, qPCR on self-collected specimens offers a viable decentralised approach to HPV screening in remote populations.

    Detection and genotyping of human papillomavirus virus (HPV): a comparative analysis of clinical performance in cervical and urine samples in Chilean women

    Urine self-collection detected CIN2/3 with 90.2% sensitivity compared with 93.4% for cervical samples, showing moderate concordance (kappa 0.42) and similar HPV16 detection rates. This validates urine-based HPV screening as a less invasive, patient-centric approach that could expand cervical cancer screening coverage in decentralised healthcare settings.

    Interest of human papillomavirus DNA quantification and genotyping in paired cervical and urine samples to detect cervical lesions

    In 230 women, HPV detection in self-collected urine showed 90 per cent agreement with cervical sampling (κ=0.80), with 97 per cent concordance for high-risk types. High viral load in urine correlated with cytological abnormalities, suggesting urine self-sampling could enable decentralised cervical cancer screening with good accuracy.
