Insights into polycrystalline microstructure of blood films with 3D Mueller matrix imaging approach

Ushenko et al.

The finding, in our words

A 3D Mueller-matrix imaging technique analysing dried blood smears distinguished prostate cancer patients from healthy individuals with over 90 percent accuracy by identifying structural changes in blood proteins. This approach offers a minimally invasive method for early cancer detection and monitoring.

Genome and clonal hematopoiesis stability contrasts with immune, cfDNA, mitochondrial, and telomere length changes during short duration spaceflight

Telomere length increased during short-duration spaceflight and shortened after return, while cell-free DNA showed heightened immune signatures persisting for months; dried blood spot microsampling enabled decentralised, patient-centric collection and multi-omic analysis, validating remote specimen collection in extreme environments.

Early Detection of Lung Cancer Using Small RNAs

A prospective study of 1384 individuals developed an 18-small RNA signature (miLung) for lung cancer detection, achieving an area under the curve of 0.86 in discovery and 0.83 in validation cohorts. Diagnostic performance increased with tumour stage, and dried blood spot collection suggests feasibility for home self-collection.

Liquid Biopsy for Pancreatic Cancer Detection Using Infrared Spectroscopy

ATR-FTIR spectroscopy of dried blood serum distinguished pancreatic cancer from healthy controls with 92% sensitivity and 88% specificity (AUC 0.95), and from symptomatic non-malignant controls with over 75% sensitivity and specificity (AUC 0.83). This proof-of-concept demonstrates potential for a simple, minimally invasive liquid biopsy approach to improve early detection of pancreatic cancer in decentralised settings.

Liquid Chromatographic Methods for Microsampling in Sports Drug Monitoring: Progress in DBS and VAMS

The analysis indicates that dried blood spots and volumetric absorptive microsampling enable minimally invasive monitoring of prohibited substances, with volumetric absorptive microsampling offering improved quantitative reliability over traditional dried spots.

Surrogate-based LC-MS/MS quantification of endogenous creatinine in plasma, plasma-equivalent dried spots (qDPS), and volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS): an ICH M10-compliant bridging study

Researchers successfully validated an analytical method for measuring creatinine across plasma and volumetric absorptive microsampling devices, demonstrating strong correlation between conventional plasma and dried microsamples. This provides a reliable, patient-centric approach for monitoring kidney function remotely during transplant follow-up.
