Impact of blood volume, air exposure duration, transport duration, and testing delay on plasma total carbon dioxide in simulated open collections using microtainers

The finding, in our words

Plasma total carbon dioxide concentrations were significantly lower in BD Microtainers compared to standard vacutainers, with reductions driven by low sample volume and transport delays rather than brief air exposure. These findings indicate that microtainers must be filled completely and analysed rapidly to maintain accuracy for this analyte.

    Although most kidney transplant recipients successfully collected capillary blood samples at home, haemolysis and transport conditions affected analyte stability. Agreement with venous sampling was acceptable for haemoglobin and creatinine, but potassium and haematocrit exceeded total allowable error limits.
