Actigraphy Analysis of Sleep Associates with Salivary IL-6 Concentration in Institutionalized Older Individuals

In 61 nursing home residents, actigraphy-derived sleep parameters showed significant correlations with salivary IL-6 concentrations. These associations between inflammatory markers and objective sleep measures support the use of combined wearable monitoring and saliva microsampling to assess sleep disturbances in institutionalised older adults.

    Heat-Treated <i>Limosilactobacillus fermentum</i> PS150 Improves Sleep Quality with Severity-Dependent Benefits: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial

    The study found that a heat-treated probiotic formulation did not significantly improve sleep scores in the full cohort but did modulate endocrine markers, showing up-regulated nocturnal melatonin and improved daytime orexin levels, with a tendency toward reduced nocturnal salivary cortisol. Benefits were more pronounced in participants with higher baseline insomnia severity, suggesting the intervention may be most useful for symptomatic populations.

    Improving physical movement during stroke rehabilitation: investigating associations between sleep measured by wearable actigraphy technology, fatigue, and key biomarkers

    Stroke rehabilitation patients showed poor sleep quality that correlated with fatigue severity. Grip strength associated with salivary biomarkers of neuroplasticity (BDNF) and inflammation (CRP), suggesting wearable sleep monitoring and saliva testing could guide personalised remote rehabilitation strategies.

    This narrative review finds that saliva is best suited to repeated neuroendocrine and metabolic measurements during exercise, sweat is most mature for electrolyte and sweat-rate monitoring with wearable compatibility, and exhaled breath offers access to volatile metabolism but remains instrumentally demanding. Each matrix requires matching to a defined clinical or exercise question with matrix-specific validation before translational use.
