Performance of human papillomavirus DNA detection in residual specimens taken for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae nucleic acid amplification testing in men who have sex with men
Nugent et al.
The finding, in our words
Residual pooled rectal/pharyngeal/first-void urine specimens and residual rectal swabs showed 89% and 88% concordance respectively with dedicated anal swabs for HPV DNA detection, with marginally higher positivity rates. This demonstrates that leftover STI test material can reliably be repurposed for HPV prevalence monitoring in men who have sex with men, enabling decentralised public health surveillance without additional patient burden.
