Identifying a consensus sample type to test for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis and human papillomavirus
Coorevits et al.
The finding, in our words
Vaginal swabs achieved 86% sensitivity for five STIs (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis and human papillomavirus), substantially exceeding the 63% sensitivity of first-void urine in a prospective cohort of female sex workers. This validation supports adopting self-collected vaginal swabs as the consensus sample type for decentralised STI screening programmes.
