Blood lipids among young children in Europe: results from the European IDEFICS study

European sex- and age-specific reference values for blood lipids in 13,579 children aged 2-11 were established using capillary sampling and a point-of-care analyser. These data support decentralised cardiovascular screening programmes in paediatric populations, showing boys have higher HDL-C but lower total cholesterol and triglycerides than girls.

In 277 paediatric patients, capillary microsampling with the Microsemi CRP device found close agreement with venous testing for CRP, with a mean difference of -0.25 mg/dL and 95% limits of -2.1 to 1.6 mg/dL. WBC showed a bias of -18 × 100/μL, with 95% limits of -73 to 37 × 100/μL. This supports decentralised, patient-centric screening of febrile children.
This study of 82 children with concussion found that capillary blood collected with a Mitra device within 48 hours of injury could not identify protein markers that predict persistent posttraumatic headache at two weeks. The negative result highlights the need for novel biomarker discovery to enable risk stratification in paediatric concussion using decentralised sampling.
Isoelectric focusing from dried blood spot and capillary samples yields results identical to serum for transferrin glycosylation, with stable storage at -20 degrees Celsius for more than six months, enabling reliable diagnosis and therapy control of congenital disorders of glycosylation and supporting home self-collection for follow-up.

The study found that capillary dried plasma spots correlated strongly with venous plasma for detecting the Alzheimer's disease biomarker p-tau217.
