Salivary Dysfunction in Primary and Secondary Sjögren's Syndrome: Functional Assessment and the Exploratory Role of Salivary Microcrystallization

Ghiorghe et al.

The finding, in our words

Unstimulated whole salivary flow averaged 0.272 mL/min and stimulated flow 1.04 mL/min; primary Sjögren's syndrome showed lower flow rates than secondary disease, and stimulated flow remained associated with grade ≥3 salivary dysfunction after adjustment. Salivary microcrystallisation indices were exploratory and did not robustly correlate with flow, pH or dysfunction severity, limiting their clinical value without standardisation.

Validation of Dried Saliva for Molecular Diagnostics

The study found that self-collected dried saliva on FishburneTabs achieved 92% accuracy for viral RNA detection compared to standard liquid saliva samples. This method supports decentralised testing by enabling reliable sample storage and transport for upper respiratory infections.

Integrating Microsampling in Human Biomonitoring: Methodologies, Regulatory Frameworks, and Case Study Insights

This review establishes that microsampling across blood, saliva, urine and stool matrices offers validated workflows and regulatory recognition for human biomonitoring comparable to conventional methods. It finds that these decentralised approaches enhance participant acceptability and enable screening in remote or low-resource settings.

Exploring hormonal influences on nicotine craving and use across the perinatal period: A prospective longitudinal study

In a study of 46 perinatal nicotine users, dried blood spots and saliva were used weekly to measure reproductive hormones, finding that lower postpartum estradiol and greater peripartum declines in oxytocin were associated with increased nicotine craving and use. This demonstrates the feasibility of decentralised microsampling and remote surveys for longitudinal hormone tracking in vulnerable populations.

Toward needle-free lamotrigine monitoring: Proof-of-concept for saliva and dried saliva spot analysis by LC-MS/MS - a short communication

Saliva and dried saliva spot lamotrigine concentrations correlated strongly with plasma (R approximately 0.84 to 0.85), supporting saliva and DSS as needle-free alternatives for therapeutic drug monitoring.

Study design with responsible return of results for a fully remote genome sequencing study in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome

This study demonstrated that a fully remote genome sequencing study using self-collected dried blood spots and buccal swabs is feasible for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome, with all participants completing the study and reporting the process was easy despite being lengthy. The design successfully returned actionable genetic findings, including those related to blood clot formation, to participants.
