Population prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in a high HIV burden district in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Implications for HIV epidemic control
Kharsany et al.
The finding, in our words
In a South African district with high HIV burden, STIs were common: HSV-2 affected nearly six in ten people, and other STIs including Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and syphilis were present in up to nine percent. HIV infection and higher viral load were associated with increased likelihood of several STIs, indicating ongoing transmission risk and a need for expanded STI surveillance and targeted interventions.
