Performance of 4 Molecular Assays for Detection of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in a Sample of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men
Footman et al.
The finding, in our words
Among 181 HIV-positive men who have sex with men, four nucleic acid amplification assays showed variable sensitivity for detecting chlamydia and gonorrhea from self-collected rectal and urine specimens, with the ProbeTec GCQ assay significantly less sensitive for rectal gonorrhea. Urine-only screening would have missed more than 80 per cent of infections, underscoring the need for extragenital self-sampling in decentralised sexually transmitted infection diagnostics for this population.
