Effectiveness of Preanalytic Practices on Contamination and Diagnostic Accuracy of Urine Cultures: a Laboratory Medicine Best Practices Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
LaRocco et al.
The finding, in our words
Boric acid and refrigeration preserved urine specimens for up to 24 hours, while room temperature storage beyond four hours caused microbial overgrowth; however, the evidence strength for these preservation findings was rated low. For men, midstream clean-catch collection reduced contamination compared with first-void sampling, with high-strength evidence supporting this difference.
A paraphrase to the Library’s standard, never the abstract. The source is one link away and is always the authority.
