Dysuria in the emergency department: missed diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis
Wilbanks et al.
The finding, in our words
In an urban emergency department, only 20% of women aged 19-25 presenting with dysuria and diagnosed with urinary tract infection were tested for chlamydia, and 21% of those tested were positive, yet only 42% of positive cases received effective treatment; the authors argue that routine sexual history taking and the availability of self-administered vaginal swab and first-void urine chlamydia tests could improve detection.
