Renal Cell Carcinoma Discrimination through Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Dried Human Urine and Machine Learning Techniques

Buhas et al.

The finding, in our words

Dried urine ATR-FTIR spectroscopy distinguished renal cell carcinoma from healthy controls with 82% accuracy using principal component analysis combined with linear discriminant analysis. Creatinine signal intensity was significantly lower in cancer cases, suggesting a potential decentralised screening tool, though further validation against other urological diseases is required.

Serial Dried Blood Spot C-Peptide Sampling, but Not Urine C-Peptide-to-Creatinine Ratio, Detects Early Preservation of β-Cell Function in New-Onset Type 1 Diabetes: Experience From the USTEKID Trial

Frequent dried blood spot sampling detected early changes in beta-cell function more effectively than mixed-meal tolerance tests or urine ratios, supporting its potential as a decentralised monitoring tool for clinical trials.

Integrating Microsampling in Human Biomonitoring: Methodologies, Regulatory Frameworks, and Case Study Insights

This review establishes that microsampling across blood, saliva, urine and stool matrices offers validated workflows and regulatory recognition for human biomonitoring comparable to conventional methods. It finds that these decentralised approaches enhance participant acceptability and enable screening in remote or low-resource settings.

Analysis of albumin-to-creatinine ratio on automated analysers using a microsampling card (Capitainer DIP70 card) for the collection of urine

The dried urine spot device showed strong agreement with liquid urine across three clinical chemistry analysers and stable performance across temperatures, enabling decentralised ambient collection for albumin-to-creatinine ratio.

Quantification of Urinary NGAL Using Volumetric Dried Urine Sampling

Urinary NGAL measured from dried urine spots collected on Capitainer qDBS discs correlated strongly with liquid urine measurements (R² = 0.98) and showed good agreement, with a median recovery of 95.4%. This validates volumetric dried urine microsampling for decentralised kidney injury biomarker testing in paediatric populations.

From urine to serum: blood-based matrices reshape the future of anti-doping testing

Blood-based matrices such as serum and dried blood spots offer direct access to circulating analytes, overcoming key detection limitations of traditional urine testing for agents like erythropoiesis-stimulating drugs and peptide hormones. Capillary microsampling technologies provide simplified collection workflows that support the expansion of multi-matrix anti-doping and biological passport programmes.
