Prevalence and Risk Factors for Rectal and Urethral Sexually Transmitted Infections From Self-Collected Samples Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men Participating in the Keep It Up! 2.0 Randomized Controlled Trial

The finding, in our words

In a sample of 1113 young men who have sex with men, 15.1% tested positive for any STI, 13.0% for rectal STI and 3.4% for urethral STI; rectal chlamydia was more common than rectal gonorrhoea and rectal infections were associated with black race and condomless receptive anal sex with casual partners. The findings support the use of self-collected samples to expand STI testing access in decentralised settings.

    This randomised trial found that peer-delivered HIV self-testing and sexually transmitted infection self-sampling did not improve oral pre-exposure prophylaxis adherence among transgender women in Uganda compared to standard care. Adherence was monitored using dried blood spots and urine, which showed a strong correlation in tenofovir detection.

    Urine microsampling for HPV DNA shows high correlation with cervical infections and enables home self-collection, which simplifies follow-up in vaccine efficacy trials.     A study of 2500 women found 99.0% agreement between first-void urine and vaginal self-sampling for HPV detection using Cobas4800, with 98.1% of participants preferring urine. Although conducted in a resource-limited setting which may limit generalisability, these results support urine as a viable sample type for decentralised, patient-centric screening.

    This study found that self-collected vaginal swabs and first-void urine yielded comparable detection rates for vaccine-targeted high-risk HPV types, supporting the use of both patient-centric methods for decentralised surveillance.
