Best methods for urine sample collection for diagnostic accuracy in women with urinary tract infection symptoms: a systematic review
Llor et al.
The finding, in our words
The review found no consistent evidence that midstream urine collection with or without cleansing reduces contamination compared with other non-invasive methods, and only limited data suggested first-void urine had higher contamination than midstream in one study; this matters for decentralised diagnostics because it questions the universal recommendation of midstream collection and supports evaluating simpler, patient-collected methods such as first-void urine for home testing.
